To celebrate Thanksgiving, classroom teacher and I deigned some projects for students—to make a Thanksgiving card for any teacher they want to say thanks.

为了庆祝感恩节,我和宋老师一起为学生设计了感恩节的手工活动,他们可以为学校的任何一位老师做一张表示感恩的卡片。

After that, we played two videos to show why do Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.

做完卡片,我们一起观看了两个有关感恩节由来的视频。

In the morning of Thanksgiving, I helped my host family to cook the Thanksgiving lunch, it was the first time to see the whole turkey and it was delicious.

感恩节一早,我就开始帮寄宿家庭做感恩节午餐,这是我第一次见到整只火鸡,味道很不错!

2016美国志愿者教师岗中培训 2016 Multi-State Chinese Teachers’ Professional Development Conference

Form Nov. 11-13, 2016, University of Kentucky Confucius Institute hold the 2016 Multi-State Chinese Teachers’  professional Development Conference.

2016年11月11日到13日,肯塔基大学孔子学院为部分美国汉语志愿者教师举办了一次岗中培训。

They got almost 200 Chinese volunteer teachers together, also they invited many important scholars, who gave us big help in teaching. During the opening ceremony, we met Mr. Tingxi Ming, the First Secretary, Office of Education, China Embassy.

参加这次培训的老师约200人,同时他们也邀请了许多业内知名的学者为我们讲座,在开幕式上,我们还见到了驻美大使馆教育处一等秘书明廷玺先生。1252658259

The presentations they gave us such as Engaging Activities for K-12 Chinese Classrooms, Classroom Management Strategies for Elementary School,  are very useful and impressive.

Also, the schedule the designed was wonderful, too. They showed us the famous  Lexington horse race course during the first day lunch time.

我要当州长!Our Election in class.

American Presidential Election is approaching, we had an “Governor of the state election “in my class, too.

美国总统大选将近,我们在班里也为学生们举行了一次“我要当州长”的选举。1967805943

 

First of all, we asked students to discuss that how do we write a speech, after discussion, we and students made a draft of election speech, they can fill it up with their own words.

首先,我们让学生来讨论一篇好的竞选演说应该怎么写,讨论过后,每一位同学都要写一篇属于自己的演讲稿。

After they all finished writing the speech, we were told that there were 11 students wanted to be the candidates. So we prepared speech table and election voting tickets for them.

写完演讲稿,我们一共有11名学生报名参加选举,所以老师们为他们准备了演讲台和投票箱。

Each of them gave us a speech, all students voted. It was a good and meaningful experience for kids to have a idea about election.

每个竞选者上台进行演说,所有小朋友投票。这次竞选对每位同学来说都是一次有意义的经历。

万圣节快乐!Happy Halloween!

Today is Halloween, everyone in my class wears costume, including me!

Before Halloween, we sent parents emails that everyone can wear costume on Halloween,  and also, they can bring candies if they want.

万圣节之前,我们给家长发邮件说明孩子们都可以自愿穿万圣节的衣服来学习,当然啦,他们也可以带糖果来!

In the beginning of class, we learned the origin of the Halloween, and asked students that if they know any stories about Halloween.

在上课伊始,我们通过视频介绍了万圣节的由来,同时也让孩子们讲了讲他们所熟知的万圣节小故事。

 

 

神奇的“安静区” Take a break!

In LILA, we Language Ambassadors, including Chinese-speakers and Spanish-speakers,  would have a training meeting, which about American education and teaching.

Today our topic is when a student interrupt your teaching or he(she) can not control himself (herself),how to ask students take a break in class, how ambassadors can help with students that are not being reflective when they are coming back and choosing the same behavior.

The ambassador can ask the student “are you OK not being part of the group”, “how do you feel about this” etc. Positive reflection are an effective tool also. It should not be punitive.

去“安静区”其实是美国学校和家庭教育中对孩子常见的管理方法——“time out”,基本的意思是“淘汰出局”,这是一个自我反思的过程,而绝非惩罚。“安静区”的位置在美国的教室布置中有它独特的原则:远离教室门、窗,远离学生学习、活动区,安静、不受干扰, 一般都设在离门较远的墙角处,主要是为了给学生一个进行反思、做出选择从而行动的区域。

对于上小学这个年纪的小孩子来说,time-out的功能主要就是take away privilege(剥夺其享受的特权)在“安静区”只能眼睁睁地看看其他小朋友开心地玩游戏或者听讲,自己什么都不能参与,渐渐形成条件反射,知道哪些行为是会被time-out的。

在上课的过程中,如果学生出现扰乱课堂秩序的情况时,老师或助教可以请这名学生到“安静区”反思一下自己的行为,并做出正确的选择,让扰乱课堂秩序的学生快速意识到自己问题,并保证其他学生的学习尽量不受影响。

这时候,助教就可以去“安静区”问问这个学生了:

你现在在想什么?

你现在没有和大家坐在一起是什么心情?

你应该怎么做呢?

你准备好回去了吗?

不断地问问题从而让学生不断地反思。同时老师也可以给正在听讲地学生一个积极的反馈:谢谢一直都坐得很正的小朋友,谢谢手放在自己身上、没有碰到别人的小朋友。这样既可以重新获得学生的注意力,又不必单独拿出时间来管纪律

课堂管理常识要求学生待在“安静区”的分钟数不能超过学生的年龄,一般是年龄减二,比如十岁的孩子,不应超过十分钟,有心的老师还可以做一个“安静区”记录,写上时间和原因,作为课堂纪律备档,家长会时可让家长参阅,更是学生纪律行为评估的重要依据。

 如果学生没有能冷静下来,还撅着嘴, 跺脚,皱眉的,老师会警告他要么马上转变态度,要么升级送教导主任办公室,绝不会让一个还不顺服的孩子回到课堂学习中来。

 

 

我们会写中文数字啦! We can write Chinese numbers!

Last week we focused on counting and writing Chinese numbers, some kids already knew how to count in Chinese in Pre-K, some did not.

We taught kids Chinese characters strokes first, then showed them the sequence. Most of them could write well, some of them forgot the sequences easily. In that case, we played  video about Chinese characters sequences to intensify their memory.
